Was happy to see Joshua and Ryan (The Minimalists) in Milwaukee again as they promote their book Everything That Remains. The last event they had in Milwaukee was in December, 2011, and the group included eight of us plus Joshua, Ryan, and their friend Joel Runyon. A mere three years later, the event at Boswell Books included hundreds of attendees gathered to hear Josh and Ryan’s story and listen to a reading from the book. The Minimalists are quite entertaining, at ease with themselves and others, and are quite open and vulnerable in their writing.
This past year, I’ve been learning that people matter more than things. It’s that statement that has gotten me out of my comfort zone and out in the community to meet friends, attend parties when I really want to be at home, and to stay longer at events with friends so that our conversations have more time to go deeper as we become more vulnerable with our words and emotions. (For instance, as I think back to the last time Josh and Ryan were in town, I chose to leave after the meet up instead of going with the group to a bar just around the corner. Most others went, but I was concerned about getting home so late on a weeknight, so I declined and went home. If I could make the same decision again, I'd choose quality time with the group because people matter more than a time on a clock. The group was gathered for just that night, while there existed many more nights in which to get more sleep.)
Some of the memorable quotes from the evening were, “Love people, use things. The opposite never works.” and “It’s not a how to book, it’s a why to book.”
A talented artist captured many of the main points of a recent Chicago event in his drawing. (See davesink.com for more sketches from the evening.)
I highly recommend attending any event at which The Minimalists speak. Plus they are generous with the hugs, reminding us “They’re transferable.”
Speaking of their events, The Minimalists will be in Madison, Wisconsin, tonight, and I will be attending with my aunt and a friend. I’ve no doubt they will find The Minimalists as entertaining, thoughtful, and helpful as I have.
